Key Questions To Ask Your Chiropractor

  • What types of payment plans are available?  Not all chiropractic care is covered by health insurance.  First, check with your insurance provider to verify what treatments are covered and also to get a list of providers in your area.  If you choose a practitioner not covered by your insurance, the office may be willing to work with you on a payment planto cover expenses.

  • Will I need x-rays?  Believe it or not, chiropractors actually receive more training in reading x-rays than traditional medicine physicians.Chiropractors use x-rays to rule out fractures or other serious problems before formulating a treatment plan.  X-rays are also important to evaluate the health of joints and discsand to estimate the amount of time treatment may take to improve the condition.  Verify with your chiropractor if and when x-rays will be taken and how they will be used in treatment planning.

  • What techniques will you use to treat me?  There are a plethora of chiropractic techniques available; however, not all chiropractors are skilled in all techniques.  Some chiropractors, like physicians, only specialize in certain conditions.  Be sure to ask whether or not your condition(s) are treated.  Ask for specifics about how many cases your chiropractor has treated and what the success rate is.  A well-rounded chiropractor skilled in a variety of techniques to treat a multitude of medical conditions is best.

  • Do you have references? It is completely reasonable to ask for at least five references from your chiropractor (or any physician for that matter) before beginning treatment.  Your health is extremely important and you have every right to demand references from anyone who will be caring for you. Ask for current patients as well as other chiropractors’ references to help you decide whether or not to proceed with care.

  • What can I do at home to help with my care? It can actually be quick and easy to prevent your pain from coming backwithout the use of drugs or surgery. You may be able to prolong the benefits of the care you’ve received and help prevent re-injury in the future. Don’t forget to ask your chiropractor before you leave your appointment to have a clear understanding of what you can do at home to continue your recovery outside of the office. An Australian chiropractor who came under fire for a video which showed him cracking the back of a four-day old baby girl has responded to the controversy insisting ‘we don’t crack anything’.

Footage of Ian Rossborough, from Melbourne, treating the tiny infant for colic by manipulating her spine went viral last week and drew strong criticism from doctors, with some branding it ‘cruel’.

Rossborough responded to the furore in another video posted to his YouTube channel that shows him demonstrating on his daughter.

‘We don’t crack anything, it’s not a crack, it’s a very specific, it’s the end of my fingers… and it’s about that much pressure’, the chiropractor said, demonstrating on his week-old daughter.

‘The reason why we adjust the baby is because the parents bring them to us. They’ve usually already been to the medical doctors, they’ve usually already been to hospital, they’ve usually already been to a number of different places and they come to us in desperation,’ he explained.
